The Uncharted Veterinary Conference Guide

Thinking about coming to the Uncharted Veterinary Conference but have no idea what to expect? Are you unsure of what it means to become an Uncharted Community member? Here is your guide to why Uncharted is unique and how it can help you well beyond these three days in Greenville, SC.

Networking at Uncharted

The first day of any Uncharted Conference feels like getting ready for the party of the year! The “Anchor Ball” is the introduction to what Uncharted is all about. The first thing to know: you won't be an anonymous face in a crowd of hundreds. We cap our live events at 150 attendees so no one feels lost in a sea of people and strong connections can be made.

Opening night is full of interactive table discussions, ice breakers, and introductions. You'll be moving around the Westin Poinsett ballrooms meeting speakers, sponsors, and other attendees. It's a great time to network and make some conference buddies. It's also the first chance at getting points for the Social Media Scavenger Hunt.

The Anchor Ball officially opens with introductions by the Uncharted Conference Founder, Dr. Andy Roark. He and the Uncharted Team mix in some group discussions to stimulate discussions about what YOUR Uncharted experience will be. After Andy's Keynote talk and a few other surprises, you'll head to bed feeling inspired and prepared for the Conference you've just helped create. (Want to know more? Choose Your Own Adventure is explained at the Conference!).

What will you learn at the Uncharted Veterinary Conference?

The Uncharted Conference in April is our flagship event. In celebration of 5 years serving the veterinary profession, we have shifted the focus of this conference inward. You’re not looking to grow your business outwardly – you’re looking for ways to build resiliency and reignite your love for your career. During this 3-day adventure in beautiful Greenville, South Carolina, you’ll be discussing topics like hiring for culture, creating the story that becomes your path, and building smoother, more simple ways to practice.

You will also learn about your fellow Community members. We offer opportunities like Mic Drop talks to allow attendees to share stories about their paths through veterinary medicine and beyond. They are a fan-favorite of our live events and a bonding experience for everyone involved!

How do we make the Uncharted conferences fun?

Uncharted live events are conferences that you create. The experiences you have depend on your readiness to jump in and learn in a whole new way. The Uncharted team works together to bring you the content you need now and find creative ways to address the problems in veterinary medicine with open and honest discussion. Mixed into every Uncharted event is a little bit of magic. Surprise outings and scavenger hunts are just a couple of the ways fun is infused into every Uncharted experience.

We encourage our attendees at every event, live or virtual, to take the Conference and make it what YOU need. No chains (except maybe that stubborn lap cat) hold you to our schedule. Make the most of your breaks and have coffee with a few new friends, compare notes with your leadership team that's attending with you or take that cat nap to recharge. You do you!

How will you ACTUALLY go back to your clinic and Get Sh*t Done?

The last part of every Uncharted Veterinary Conference is dedicated to planning how YOU will take what you learned back to practice. Led by Dr. Andy Roark and Stephanie Goss, you'll walk through strategic planning that will set you up for success in achieving your clinic culture goals. By the end of the conference, you'll have new contacts, new tools, and newfound energy to tackle your problems in practice.

What happens if you love Uncharted and want more?

If you don't want your Uncharted experience to end, the Uncharted Community is the perfect place to continue the conversation! Members get access to all of the previous virtual event content, free access to virtual workshops and exclusive entry to our live events. We are making our return to Greenville for the first time in 3 years at this event! You will be able to ask questions and reach out to any of the Community members anytime – which means you're even more likely to reach the goals you make at the conference.

Ready to find your tribe? Register now for the Uncharted Veterinary Conference! We can't wait to see you soon.

Doctor Sensitive Can’t Take Criticism

Uncharted Veterinary Podcast Episode 151 - Doctor Sensitive can't take criticism

What's This Episode About?

This week on the podcast, Dr. Roark and Stephanie tackle a letter from the mailbag. A practice owner wrote in, feeling very frustrated by an associate doctor on their team who is struggling significantly with self-confidence and their belief in themselves as a good doctor. It seems like any time someone on the team asks questions about a patient’s care or double checks a drug dose or asks to look at x-rays and discuss what the doctor is seeing, Dr. Sensitive takes those as personal affronts and explodes in anger or tears. They feel like the team doesn’t trust them and doesn't act like they believe they are a good doctor. Our practice owner is wondering what to do since it feels like a lot of is being blown out of proportion and aren’t things they themselves would be fussed over.  Let’s get into this…

Uncharted Veterinary Podcast Episode 145 - Letting go of the "I am giving my notice" guilt

A listener, Dr. Fed Up, wants to quit their job at a new practice and move on to something that would be a better fit for them but is struggling with 3 questions – How do I tell them why I am leaving, how much notice do I give, and do I feel guilty that the leaders of this practice may have to close a location (temporarily or permanently) due to lack of veterinarians?

Uncharted Podcast Episode 144 – The Vet Who Won't Go Home

Uncharted Veterinary Podcast Episode 144

In this episode of the Uncharted Podcast, Dr. Andy Roark and Stephanie tackle a topic they were discussing with a colleague. Except that this veterinarian won't STOP working!

What do you do with the vet who won't go home?

Uncharted Veterinary Podcast Episode 143 Title Image - There is always an excuse

Can you teach accountability? We received an email from a practice owner who is frustrated with a member of their team who always seems to have an excuse for their mistakes or breaking protocols. They asked Andy and Stephanie: “How do I help them self-reflect a little better and to take ownership of things rather than blame it on something or someone else?” Get ready for some serious discussion on how clear is kind.

Uncharted Podcast Episode 138 – GP vs ER: When Did We All Become Enemies?

Uncharted Veterinary Podcast Episode 138 - When did we all become enemies?

Dr. Roark and Stephanie tackle a feisty topic. When did General Practices (GP) and Veterinary Emergency Clinics (ER) become enemies? It seems like the divide is growing more vast every day. General veterinary hospitals and emergency veterinary hospitals are both understaffed, overwhelmed with clients and patients, and struggling to keep afloat every day. So where is the animosity coming from? And the bigger question that Andy and Stephanie want to dig into – how do we tackle this issue? What points should each side consider and how the heck do we put ourselves in the other’s shoes so that we can start to regain some of our empathy!

Uncharted Podcast Episode 147 – The Team is Acting Badly

Uncharted Veterinary Podcast Episode 147 - The team is acting badly

A listener wrote in to ask about toxicity creeping back into her veterinary team. In the last few months, the griping and the passive-aggressive comments have snuck in. People are eye-rolling at each other and biting each other's heads off over little things. This practice owner is feeling defeated and is also determined to get their positive culture back and hold the team accountable. Since everyone is involved, they are planning a team meeting to discuss.

A Big Win for a Veterinary Practice Owner

photo of hands holding up a trophy

Veterinary practice owners don't always notice the amazing things they do every single day. Sometimes, they have to be reminded to hold up their trophies – even with the small wins. Recently in the Uncharted Community, one practice owner had a BIG win that she shared with us.

A Big Win for a Veterinary Practice Owner

“I'm going to hold the trophy here for a second…

Last week, one of our Client Service Representatives told my Practice Manager/Co-Owner that she was offered a position with another company that she couldn't refuse. She told us that she wasn't looking for other jobs, that this just fell into her lap, and because it would be a significant raise and she would be able to work from home, she really felt it was an opportunity she couldn't turn down.

I was devastated. This person has been a great addition to our team, she believes in our values and wants so well to do a great job for us. However, she is also a bit overqualified for her CSR role, so I tried to remind myself of that when I wanted to curl up and cry.

Fast forward to 24 hours later. She came back and told us that she rescinded her acceptance for the other position and she wanted to continue working for us if we would allow her.

What happened in those 24 hours???

Her grandmother, someone who was a large part of her life and her kids' lives died unexpectedly.

And in those 24 hours, we offered her something that was irreplaceable and worth more than any amount of money (her words)… we did this by giving her time to cry in the morning, by me sitting next to her on the couch in the break room and giving her a hug, and by our practice manager acknowledging what a big decision this was and encouraged her not to rush it. Also by reminding her that being with her family during the time was much more important than anything we had going on at work.

“There Are Days When You Want to Quit… Stick to It.”

THIS is what keeps me going.

It's what I need to hold on to, to write down so I remember.

This is what I need to share with you – because there are days when you want to quit and it doesn't seem worth it, but if you stick to it, if you lead with your heart, it will be worth it. I am so thankful I have all of you to keep me moving in the right direction. Also that I didn't have to have that initial conversation with her and that my practice manager/co-owner could give their time and real attention to her when she needed it. Lastly, I want to encourage you guys to realize when you have a moment to ‘hold your trophy'. ?❤️⚓️”
