Canva In Your Veterinary Hospital Is A Must-Have

We all have our favorite tools in vet med. Things we just couldn't imagine working without. The tool that every person working on social media in veterinary hospitals needs is without a doubt, Canva. If you've been working on social media at all for your veterinary practice, you've probably heard of this awesome, free resource. Here are a few reasons why we think someone on your team should know Canva… even just a little bit.

What Is Canva?

Photo of a computer screen. Import a logo on Canva for your veterinary hospital.

Canva is a graphic design website with a library of content and editing tools that are simple and effective. The best part? It's FREE! There are paid options as well, but there is plenty you can do without spending a dime. Some of our favorite Canva features are the template library (hello, inspiration!), the logo folder, and the background remover.

It might sound like extra work, but you can add credibility and a professional look to your digital presence with simple additions and changes in Canva. Using Canva in your veterinary hospital and adding 2-3 minutes to your process can make all the difference!

Canva Trick #1: Watermark Your Practice Photos

We all know that we should be asking permission to take photos of patients in the veterinary hospital. People love to see their pets online and share with all of their friends – but how would they feel if they saw Max's picture show up on a random website 3 months later?

Watermarking your photos can give your clients that extra confidence in saying yes. If your name is on your images, then they are less likely to get stolen and used for someone else's products or pages! Canva makes this easy. All you have to do is upload your logo (a PNG file most likely has the transparent background you'll need), drop it into the bottom right or left corner of your image, and you're done!

Make the logo slightly transparent for an even more polished look.

PRO TIP: Have a JPEG image only for your logo, which means it comes with a white background? Learn how to get a transparent background here.

Canva Trick #2: Make Announcement Posts In 2 Minutes

How many times has something come up at your hospital that the manager says, “Hey, can we let our clients know about this on Facebook?” Schedule changes, technology issues, curbside updates… all of these important announcements will need to catch some attention. Canva can help those announcements POP on the page – and fast! Here's how:

  1. Create a design. We recommend choosing an Instagram Post size for versatility
  2. Search templates for “Announcements”
  3. Choose one out of the HUNDREDS of options
  4. Customize it as much as you want/have time for with your announcement information
  5. Save the design and then share it on your pages!

Give important announcements some extra attention with Canva so they aren't so easily scrolled by. Your manager and voicemail machine will thank you for it!

Canva Trick #3: Remove Unsightly Backgrounds

How many times have you gotten a GREAT photo of a pet, but there was something unfortunate in the background? This calls for the background remover on Canva!

With the click of one button, you can remove the background on an image. It isn't perfect every time, but it's a huge leap from needing Adobe Photoshop to salvage good photos! Here's an example:

Where Can You Start Learning How to Use Canva?

Canva has one more fantastic resource we have to mention, and that's the design school! There are videos and blogs dedicated to teaching beginners how to use Canva and make designs that wow! We recommend starting with this video.

Canva is a fun, free tool that we wouldn't want to live without. These are all reasons we think someone in your practice should know how to use it. How else have you used Canva in your veterinary hospital? Share with us on Facebook, or tag us @unchartedvet on Instagram to be featured in our Story!

Team Building is Fun… Do You Mean I Have to Pay Them Too?

Uncharted Veterinary Podcast Episode 135: Team building is fun

What's This Episode About?

This week on the podcast, Dr. Roark and Stephanie tackle a topic from the mailbag. A fellow practice manager reached out to Stephanie asking about an upcoming team building retreat they are planning. The team will get together offsite and are closing the clinic down to work on team building and have a little fun. But some of the team has stated they don’t want to come if they aren’t going to get paid. Dr. Roark and Stephanie weigh in on how to get yourself in the right headspace to tackle this one as well as some advice on protecting yourself (keep it legal!), honoring your veterinary team’s time inside and outside of the clinical schedule, and still getting to have some fun. Let’s get into this…

Little Luxuries Mean More Than You Think

The Uncharted Veterinary Community is always filled with great conversations. They're talking about everything from management to their favorite dad jokes. I can jump into the community to get a tough question answered as easily as I can jump in for a dose of positivity. This post by Community Member Summer H. had everyone talking about their favorite little luxuries:

Photo of a grapefruit and grapefruit spoon, an example of little luxuries

“What items have increased your life satisfaction disproportionate to their obvious value? Or eased your life more than expected? I grew up on a reservation, and when my parents left the reservation, they took a lot of the same attitudes with them. They have a disdain for anything ‘fancy’ or ‘unnecessary.’ And I have embraced that in my life, 95% of what I own was pre-owned. Typically, I am very content with that, but it means there are times I’ve missed something that could make my life so much easier. Grapefruit spoons for digging out juicy bites. Straw bale gardening in the clay-soil southeast. Squeegees for shower walls, pizza stones. All are luxuries that cost a bit but made my life much easier. So what are your little luxuries that improve life or free up time?” – Summer H.

There are so many little luxuries that came up in the discussion. Here are a few:

  • Ad-free music apps
  • Plant ID app
  • Good chai tea or coffee
  • Digital tablets like the Remarkable
  • The Ember Mug
  • A nice water bottle
  • Recyclable litter box service
  • My personal favorite, a garlic press

Do you grant yourself little luxuries? I tend to feel guilty or that it's not a valuable use of my resources. Then, I think about how many more meals I've cooked at home because of the garlic press. In the long run, I'm saving money on eating out. My mom sums this idea up the best. Every time I call her and ask, “Should I buy this?” the answer is similar. “How many times do you spend your money on this in a year? Does it make you happy?”

Now, little luxuries don't include the 75-inch TV I can't wait to buy, but for something like a garlic press, $12 over 365 days plus whatever I'm not spending in the drive-thru seems like more of a wise investment than a luxury.

Can you think of a little luxury that you've given yourself or your team in the veterinary clinic lately? The $20 pooper scooper that keeps your kennel attendant's back out of pain could be more than a little luxury. It could be a reminder that to the place they dedicate 12 hours a day to, they're worth a thought beyond a paycheck. There's greater value and deeper meaning in these little luxuries than meets the eye. If you see that, that's something to be proud of!

What's This Episode About?

This week on the podcast, Dr. Andy Roark and Stephanie Goss are going to get up close and personal… about money. What To Expect at the Uncharted Culture Conference, October 21-23

Uncharted Culture Conference guide

Thinking about coming to the Uncharted Culture Conference but have no idea what to expect? Are you feeling burned out on the usual webinars? Here's why Uncharted virtual events are unique and worth every minute in front of your computer.

Networking at Uncharted

The first day of any Uncharted Conference feels like getting ready for the party of the year! The “Anchor Ball” is the introduction to what Uncharted is all about. The first thing to know: you won't be just another muted face in the crowd. Opening night is full of interactive table discussions. You'll be “moving around the room” meeting speakers, sponsors, other attendees and many keyboard cats. It's a great time to network and make some conference buddies. It's also the first chance at getting points for the Social Media Scavenger Hunt.

The Anchor Ball officially opens with introductions by the Uncharted Conference Founder, Dr. Andy Roark. He and the Uncharted Team mix in some virtual conference training so you will know exactly how to make the most of your experience! After Andy's Keynote talk and a few other surprises, you'll close your laptop feeling inspired and prepared for the Conference you've just helped create. (Want to know more? Choose Your Own Adventure is explained at the Conference!).

What will you learn at the Uncharted Culture Conference?

The second day of the Uncharted Culture Conference kicks off with a general session by organizational guru Bret Canfield. Don't worry, West Coasters, you won't need to be awake before dawn to enjoy this inspiring start to the day (see the full schedule)! Bret will be teaching attendees about the difference between helping and leading, and how every person has their own control of their clinic's culture.

Next up, you'll head out of the main Gold Ballroom into the other rooms of our virtual Westin Poinsett Hotel for your chosen interactive workshops. These workshops won't have you dozing off on mute! You'll be brainstorming with other attendees and asking the questions you need answered. Small group sizes are an important part of Uncharted events so attendees get the most out of every session. If you're feeling intimidated, being off video is absolutely an option, but by the end of the day, we don't think you'll want to be!

How do we make the Uncharted virtual conferences fun?

Uncharted doesn't host your typical virtual webinar events. The Gold Ballroom will be open between every session for coffee breaks and fun. There will be prize drawings, games, trivia and of course, music! Scheduled meal times will give you a chance to stretch your legs between sessions and stay fueled up for the evening's Sponsored Night-In Events. These are optional…but previous events have included Vets Against Insanity with the game's co-creator Caitlin DeWilde, virtual escape rooms, trivia tournaments, art classes, and much more! You won't want to miss it!

We encourage our attendees at every event, live or virtual, to take the Conference and make it what YOU need. No chains (except maybe that stubborn lap cat) hold you to our schedule. Make the most of your breaks and have coffee with a few new friends, compare notes with your leadership team that's attending with you or take that cat nap to recharge. You do you!

How will you ACTUALLY go back to your clinic and Get Sh*t Done?

The last part of every Uncharted Veterinary Conference is dedicated to planning how YOU will take what you learned back to practice. Led by Dr. Andy Roark and Stephanie Goss, you'll walk through strategic planning that will set you up for success in achieving your clinic culture goals. By the end of the conference, you'll have new contacts, new tools, and newfound energy to tackle your problems in practice.

What happens if you love Uncharted and want more?

If you don't want your Uncharted experience to end, the Uncharted Community is the perfect place to continue the conversation! Members get access to all of the previous virtual event content, free access to virtual workshops and exclusive entry to our live events. We are making our return to Greenville this December for the Practice Owner Summit! You will be able to ask questions and reach out to any of the Community members anytime – which means you're even more likely to reach the goals you make at the conference.

Ready to find your tribe? Register now for the Uncharted Culture Conference! Through September 15, sign up with Early Bird Pricing and bring your whole leadership team! We can't wait to see you soon.
