The Team Is Acting Badly

Uncharted Veterinary Podcast Episode 147

What's This Episode About?

This week on the podcast, Dr. Roark and Stephanie tackle a topic they were discussing with a colleague recently. This colleague is in a position where they bought a practice a few years ago that came with a handful of toxic team members. Those people have self ejected or been weeded out and the team has been working in synergy for some time. However, in the last few months, the griping and the passive-aggressive comments have snuck in. People are eye-rolling at each other and biting each other's heads off over little things. This practice owner is feeling defeated and is also determined to get their positive culture back and hold the team accountable. Since everyone is involved, they are planning a team meeting to discuss. The practice owner wanted to know a few things about how best to set it up – they asked some great specific questions:

  1. Do I bring up specific examples of things people have done/have been doing?
  2. How hard do I come down on them for future incidents?
  3. How do I get them to correct their behavior and be accountable for their actions, without driving them out?

 Let’s get into this…

Moving On Up (From Small GP to Big Hybrid Practice)

Uncharted Veterinary Podcast Episode 146 - Moving on up from small gp to big hybrid practice

What's This Episode About?

This week on the podcast, Dr. Roark and Stephanie discuss a question that a colleague recently asked to get advice from their fellow leaders. Moving Up Manager asked for advice in making the transition from managing a small mom-and-pop GP practice that has long-term clientele and lower prices to managing a brand new high-end, boutique ER/Specialty practice. They were looking for advice on how to handle the different types of client service issues that may be unique to each type of practice as well as general advice for making that kind of transition. When Andy and Stephanie started discussing the question, they quickly agreed that there are probably a lot more similarities than differences. Let’s get into this…

October 21-23: Uncharted Culture Conference, Virtual

Culture is the heart of what makes your practice unique. It’s the blend of personalities, passions and processes that give your team a sense of belonging. It creates a clear understanding of what people can expect from their jobs and what’s expected of them. Culture can build up a practice into the place everyone in town wants to work, or more quickly break it down into the place no one wants to apply.

Every veterinary clinic has a culture — are you being intentional in choosing what yours will be?

Letting Go of the “I Am Giving My Notice” Guilt

Uncharted Veterinary Podcast Episode 145 - Letting go of the "I am giving my notice" guilt

What's This Episode About?

This week on the podcast, Dr. Roark and Stephanie tackle a topic from the mailbag. Dr. Fed Up writes in and asks for help with letting go of their guilt over giving their notice at their new practice. Dr. Fed Up was hired as a new grad and promised support and mentorship. Fast forward to the present where they are often working alone with no other veterinarian present in the building and tackling a full surgical caseload that they don’t feel confident tackling. Dr. Fed Up wants to quit and move on to something that would be a better fit for them but is struggling with 3 questions – How do I tell them why I am leaving, how much notice do I give, and do I feel guilty that the leaders of this practice may have to close a location (temporarily or permanently) due to lack of veterinarians?

The Vet Who Won’t Go Home

Uncharted Veterinary Podcast Episode 144 Image - The vet who won't go home

What's This Episode About?

This week on the podcast, Dr. Roark and Stephanie tackle a topic they were discussing with a colleague recently. This colleague is in a position where they are managing an awesome veterinarian – they are providing solid, high-quality care, the clients and team adore them and everything is pretty great. Except that this veterinarian won't STOP working!

They are working 3-4 hours after their shift has ended each day. They are not only making themselves available to their team, but they are also actively communicating about cases and patients on their days off. They cannot seem to unplug from their patients/clients and leave work at work. Our colleague was expressing their serious concern for Dr. Works-A-Lot. They are worried about their mental and physical health and wellbeing. They are worried about and care for this vet. They do not want to see them burn out! They spoke to Dr. Works-A-Lot and it got very emotional. Dr. Works-A-Lot was very upset initially because they felt like they were doing the right thing for their patients and clients by making sure charts were detailed and complete, callbacks were all made, they answered all the questions that needed to be answered, etc.

Dr. Works-A-Lot was seeing things through the lens of feeling criticism vs empathetic feedback about how work was impacting them and also how their decisions were impacting the team. Let’s get into this…
