Rebecca May

Rebecca May is the Business Development and Personnel Manager for Happy Tails Emergency Clinic in Greensboro, NC. She has an undergraduate certificate in Veterinary Practice Management from Penn Foster and is currently preparing to take the Certified Veterinary Practice Manager (CVPM) national exam. She is an active member of the Veterinary Hospital Managers Association (VHMA), the Triad Hospital Managers Group, and the Veterinary Managers Group of the Carolinas. Rebecca is also a member of the Society for Veterinary Medical Ethics, the Human-Animal Bond Association and is a Fear Free Elite Certified Professional. Rebecca has written content for CattleDog Publishing and Aspire Vet. Her interests are emergency and critical care medicine, leadership, staff development, Fear Free and low-stress handling techniques, and canine and feline enrichment.

How a No-Blame Culture Approach Can Safeguard Against Medical Errors and Other Mistakes

This session will take the guesswork out of identifying causes of medical errors and other mistakes in veterinary practices. Rebecca May is a practice manager at an emergency practice in North Carolina. Her use of an Incident Decision Tree has helped her to follow up on errors that inevitably occur in veterinary medicine with a clear look at the roles of the people involved and the systems they are working within. Building a “No Blame” approach to addressing medical errors will alleviate fear of giving and receiving feedback and improve your team’s overall response when things go wrong.

Maria Pirita, CVPM

Maria Pirita is currently the Business Development Coordinator at Uncharted Veterinary Community where she is responsible for strategic direction with industry partners and creating educational content for the veterinary community. A seasoned professional with 20 years of leadership experience and nearly a decade of that within veterinary medicine, Maria is well known for driving growth through positive culture, effective marketing strategies, and careful strategic planning. She most recently served as the Executive Director of a veterinary clinic which she directly grew from a single doctor to a multi-million dollar practice in just 3 years. Maria has an Associate's Degree in Business Administration and recently passed her exam to become a Certified Veterinary Practice Manager. She is currently based out of Tampa, Florida where she shares her home with her husband, dog, two rabbits and a quaker parrot.

About Maria's Team Leads Summit Session: Conflict Management - Mastering Mediation Conflict is always a challenge, but it is especially hard for Team Leads who frequently play the role of mediator. In this workshop, Maria Pirita, CVPM will be discussing the 7 different types of conflict resolution and how they can each be adapted to the clinic setting. She will share which of these tools make the most sense for multiple kinds of scenarios and how relationship-building plays a vital role in making conflict mediation successful.

Phil Richmond, DVM, CAPP, CCFP, CHC-BCS, CRTDr.

Dr. Phil Richmond is the Chief Medical & Team Wellbeing Officer at Veterinary United and the Founder of Flourishing Phoenix Veterinary Consultants. He is an advocate for positive culture and individual, team and organizational psychological health, safety, and wellbeing in veterinary workplaces. Dr. Richmond both leads and is involved in state, national and international projects for the advancement of wellbeing and culture in veterinary medicine.

Me, We, & Us: The Shared Responsibility of Psychological Safety

Who is responsible for psychological safety in businesses and organizations? The answer is me, we, and us. In this session, Phil will share the “me, we, and us” framework from leading organizational wellbeing research in a way that any person in a veterinary practice or business can understand. The framework covers individual wellbeing (me), developing high-quality relationships (we), and the organization’s role as whole in preventing burnout (us). You will walk away with facts that will support getting buy-in and ideas on how exactly to implement the concepts!

Mark Nunez, DVM

Dr. Mark Nunez is an LSU grad, class of 2002. Aside from the second half of his Air Force career, he’s lived in Louisiana all of his life until 3 days after graduation, when he moved to New York. He’s still not used to the cold, or taxes, or traffic, but he really loves it there!

Mark co-own’s two practices on Long Island, NY, Levittown Animal Hospital and Farmingdale Dog and Cat Clinic. They are actually on the same street! LAH is AAHA accredited and Low-Stress Handling certified.

Their hospitals have experienced very rapid growth over the past 8 years. As you can imagine, this rate of growth has created some interesting challenges! His focus since 2017 has been leadership development. He’s learned a lot and looks forward to learning more. Their number one goal is creating an outstanding client experience (assuming we all want top-notch medicine), and managing staff is a close second.

LEAN Principles in Practice

Getting buy-in on changes starts with giving everyone a chance to contribute. In this workshop with Dr. Mark Nunez, you will learn how to use LEAN principles to explain how decisions are made in your practice, and give your team a place in the conversation. If you want more efficiency and efficacy out of your processes, these principles will help you get ideas and make changes in a non-confrontational and systematic way. You’ll feel empowered to lead the charge on getting rid of wasteful or ineffective processes, and make everyone’s time in your practice feel valued!

It’s time to talk about accountability! What is it, really? What’s the difference between accountability and responsibility, and how does that influence how people in your practice feel about taking ownership of their roles? In Senani Ratnayake’s session, she will explain how to have the important conversations with your team that not only answer these questions but give them the opportunity to collaborate on what accountability looks like for your practice. Together, you will be able to work toward a meaningful, common purpose and own not only mistakes but successes along the way.
